Frequently asked questions

Answers for writers getting started with Novelist.

Getting Started

What is Novelist?

Novelist is a focused workspace for drafting and revising books and other long-form manuscripts. It combines a manuscript editor, manuscript browser, snapshots, review changes, anchors, timelines, and planning tools in one writer-first workspace.

Who is Novelist for?

Novelist is built for writers drafting books, long-form manuscripts, essays, serialized work, or story projects. It is especially useful if you want manuscript pages, structure, and revision history to stay connected.

Does Novelist replace my word processor?

For drafting and revising, that is the goal. Novelist is designed to open your whole manuscript at once, so you can move between any point in the draft without managing a separate file for every chapter or scene. Snapshots, Point Anchors, Timelines, the minimap, and Review mode help you navigate quickly while keeping the larger story in view.

Which browsers and devices does Novelist support?

Novelist supports Chrome 120+, Edge 120+, Firefox 120+, or Safari 17.2+. Desktop and laptop browsers provide the full writing experience, with lighter access available on phones and tablets.

Writing And Manuscripts

What do the Free and Pro plans include?

A Free account includes one manuscript up to 50,000 words, with drafting, cloud sync, snapshots, and review tools. Pro is designed for ongoing work and larger manuscript libraries. Novelist will ask you to upgrade before you exceed the limits included with your plan; your existing work remains yours. See the Pricing page for the current limits and features included with each plan.

Are manuscripts stored locally or online?

While you write, Novelist stores manuscript changes in your browser on the device you are using. This keeps editing fast and helps recover your work if the page closes or reloads. Without an account, manuscript content stays in that browser profile and is not sent to Novelist cloud sync. Signed-in accounts can also use cloud sync and online backup. Anyone with access to the same operating-system account and browser profile may be able to access its local data.

Can I import an existing manuscript?

Yes. Novelist can import plain text (.txt), Markdown (.md), and Rich Text Format (.rtf) files, including folders containing supported files. Word (.docx) and PDF import are not currently supported.

Can I export or print my manuscript?

Yes. Novelist can export manuscript text as HTML, Markdown, or plain text and can create a complete project archive for independent backup. Project archives cannot currently be imported back into Novelist. You can also print from Novelist using your browser's print dialog.

What happens if I clear browser data?

Local manuscript data can be removed if you clear browser storage, delete a browser profile, change browsers, or use private browsing. Cloud sync and exports can help protect your work, but you should still keep separate backups of important data. If your browser grants persistent storage, that reduces automatic removal when storage is low; it does not protect against deliberately clearing browser data.

Billing

Who processes payments?

Payments are processed by Stripe. Novelist does not store full card numbers or bank account details.

Can I change or cancel a subscription?

Yes. Subscription changes, cancellations, payment methods, and invoices are handled through the Stripe Customer Portal linked from account settings.

Security And Privacy

Does Novelist sell my manuscript or personal information?

No. Novelist does not sell personal information or manuscript content and does not use manuscript content for behavioral advertising. Novelist does not make your manuscripts public. See the Privacy Policy for details about how manuscript content is stored, processed, and shared.

When is my manuscript sent to the cloud?

Your browser handles the working manuscript while you edit. When you use a signed-in account, Novelist sends manuscript content to its cloud infrastructure to provide sync, online backup, recovery, support, security, and related account features.

Does Novelist use AI on my work?

Novelist does not use manuscript content to train AI models. Future versions may offer optional AI-assisted writing features. If you choose to use one, relevant manuscript text may be sent to an AI provider to generate the assistance you request. Novelist will identify what is sent, why it is needed, and how it is handled before you use the feature. Any future use of manuscript content for model training would require separate, affirmative consent.

How do I delete my account?

Open Settings and expand Delete account. For security, Novelist requires a sign-in from the last 10 minutes. Deletion cancels an active subscription, removes cloud-synced projects and account records, and clears Novelist site storage in the browser used for the request. Export anything you want to keep first.
